JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Johnstown inclined plane rehabilitation project is coming to a close and CamTran is currently hoping to reopen it next year.

In an update on Monday from CamTran provided the following details:

    • Edgehill Drive was reopened on July 3.
    • The contractors are currently working to finalize a corrective action plan outlining the methodology to
bring the rims into compliance and if possible, to repair on site. This plan must be approved by the
engineer of record before the mechanical contractor will be allowed to move forward. The sheave
wheel is the device that spins on the axel. The rim around the sheave wheel guides the ropes that
move the cars up and down the hillside.
    • They’re also working offsite on the safety sheave wheels and wheel rims which will be installed when
      completed.
    • If everything goes well, the plan is to have all remaining work completed this fall so the new ropes can
be installed, and final safety inspections and certifications can be conducted this winter.
    • CamTran is hoping to reopen the Inclined Plane in 2025.
    • CamTran will need to temporarily close Edgehill Drive between Greene Street and Erie Street, to install
the safety sheave wheels and rims. This will be a short temporary closure (weeks not months).
CamTran will provide notice to the public in advance of the road closure.
    • The rehabilitation project is 92% complete.

CamTran said that Conroy Engineering was hired to investigate broken wire strands in the safety rope. It was determined that the rope was not compromised and in compliance with safety standards.

It was also discovered that the main haul wheel rims and safety sheave wheel rims were not in compliance with technical specifications. These were two reasons why the inclined plane could not reopen.
