JOPLIN, MO – Logan Decker isn’t the average athlete. Competing in three different sports, state qualifying for two, the New Heights rising senior is well recognized.

A standout golfer, quarterback, and track athlete, Decker said sports are a game of the mind.

“Each sport is a mindset game, especially the ones that I play,” Decker said.

“It’s all in your head, and you’ve got to be able to push farther than what you can do.”

A family of six, the Decker household is packed. Logan’s father, Dan Decker, said Logan’s competitive edge is a product of having three older brothers.

“Logan worked super hard,” said Dan Decker.

“I tell people he’s fast and he’s kind of elusive because when you have three older brothers, that’s the only way you survive.”

Logan’s family wouldn’t just drive his desire to compete, however. Every sport for Logan and his family would be a learning experience, and the lessons his siblings learned were passed on to him.

“They [siblings] all had rough high school patches,” said Logan.

“Despite sometimes dealing with setbacks, they would all go on to play in college and find success because they kept working. It’s really what taught me to persevere.”

Despite the rough patches, Logan has learned through it all. Receiving all-region and all district honors, Logan has many accolades. However, for Logan’s dad, character is what he’s most proud of.

“I’m super proud of him,” said Dan Decker.

“His mom and I are proud of him, as we’ve been all his siblings. They just work hard and they give God the glory, and at the end of the day, they’re just really good kids.”

While Logan is the first golfer in school history to make the all-state team, and would break several records on the track, Logan’s father said he wants to pursue a football career.

Logan’s senior season at New Heights begins in August.
