    Illinois vs New York in 2024 Little League World Series: Recap and highlights

    Hinsdale Little League ended its run in the 2024 Little League World Series on Sunday morning with a 4-0 loss to New York in an elimination game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

    Illinois was held to three hits by New York pitchers Vincent Ruggiero (5 innings, 2 hits, 7 strikeouts) and Dean Scrangello (1 inning, 1 hit, 1 strikeout). Scrangello added a two-run single and nice defensive play to help New York.

    Illinois is eliminated from the LLWS. Staten Island, meanwhile, advances to another elimination game, set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 on ESPN. New York faces the winner of a game 6 p.m. Monday between the Southwest (Boerne, Texas) and Southeast (Lake Mary, Florida) region champions.

    The LLWS runs through Aug. 25, when the winners from the U.S. and international brackets face off in the championship game.

    Illinois gets two runners on base in the final inning, but is shut down by New York's Dean Scrangello to close out a 4-0 victory. The Hinsdale Little League team is eliminated from the LLWS and New York moves on.

    Hinsdale's season comes down to the bottom of its order. The Nos. 7-9 batters are due up in the sixth. Now or never for the Great Lakes regional champs from Illinois.

    New York's offensive hero Dean Scrangello — who has a two-run single and a nice defensive play — takes the mound to try and finish out the victory.

    Illinois can't answer New York and Vincent Ruggiero

    Hinsdale goes down in order in the top of the fifth. They now are six outs from elimination from the LLWS — largely because of New York's Vincent Ruggiero. The pitcher has allowed two hits and struck out seven in five innings.

    Dean Scrangello helps New York break through vs Illinois in LLWS

    New York takes the first lead of the game on an RBI single from Chace Curro. NY opened the inning with two singles before both runners advanced a base on a groundout to set up Curro's run-scoring hit. That chased pitcher Alex Vivanco.

    Grant Wanless then came into pitch for Illinois before New York added three runs on a sacrifice fly from Alex Torres, followed by a single from Jake Romero and a two-run single from Dean Scarangello.

    New York pitcher Vincent Ruggiero continues to impress, needing only nine pitches to sit down Illinois in the top of the fourth inning.

    Illinois works out of jam in LLWS elimination game

    New York led off the bottom of the third inning with a double from Dylan DeGaeta and a walk from Joe Iraci. But pitcher Alex Vivanco got a strikeout, groundout and flyout to get out of the jam. We're still scoreless.

    The seventh annual MLB Little League Classic will feature the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers playing at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport at 6 p.m. Sunday in front of Little League Baseball World Series players and their families. The traditional broadcast is set for ESPN, with a so-called "KidsCast" on ESPN2.

    Has Illinois ever won Little League World Series?

    No. The state has four United States champions, but none have won the overall championship. Kankakee was U.S. champ in 1958 and 1962, while Chicago teams won in 1967 and 2014. The 2014 title won by Jackie Robinson West Little League of Chicago was eventually forfeited because of the use of an ineligible player .

    Illinois Little League roster
