Peoria native Kendrick Green lands spot on NFL 53-man roster

Peoria native Kendrick Green earned a spot on the 53-man roster of the Houston Texans, the team announced Tuesday after official cuts were made around the NFL.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound offensive lineman from the University of Illinois will begin his fourth NFL season with the Texans. The Peoria High School graduate is listed as Houston's backup left guard and one of nine offensive linemen on the roster for Houston , which last season won the AFC South and a playoff game behind rookie quarterback CJ Stroud.

Last season, Green was traded to Houston from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who picked him in the third round of the 2021 draft . He started three of four games in Houston before tearing the meniscus in his right knee, allowing no sacks in 208 snaps . Green had surgery last fall and when he visited Peoria for his annual youth camp , he felt on track to be full strength by training camp.

"I’m doing something for my knee, getting my knee back right," Green said in June . "I’m pretty much full go now, you just have to kind of keep the training wheels on as far as training and stuff like that, then when camp comes, I’m going to rip the doors off.”

The Texans open the season noon Sunday, Sept. 8 on the road against the Indianapolis Colts. The following week, Houston hosts the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football.
