The first Civil War battle west of the Mississippi was fought at Wilson’s Creek in Republic, Missouri on August 10, 1861. At this battle Union General Nathanial Lyon was killed, he was the first Union General to be killed in action. The battle was declared a Confederate victory, this drew national attention and ushered in a call for greater Union forces.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield foundation was formed in 1950 to purchase the historic thirty-seven-acre battle site called Bloody Hill. The Missouri Legislature was able to assist the foundation to obtain an additional 1700 acres.

On the 100th anniversary of the Civil War battle, August 10th, 1961, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield was dedicated as a national park. In October of 1966, the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1970 re-designated as a National Battlefield.

As of January 1, 2023, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield will not charge an entrance fee, park rangers are ready to answer any questions about the park. Stop at the visitor center for a guide map.

The park has four miles of paved roads for exploring by car. With eight interpretive sights at significant battlefield areas, the self-guided tours, and the new mobile phone tours, make it ideal for a day of learning. Bring water and snacks or even a picnic lunch as there are no stores or stops inside the park.

The park has over five miles of designated walking and hiking trails throughout the grounds. Riding horseback is encouraged with over seven miles of riding trails. However, you choose to explore the park, the scenery is amazing and you will want to have a camera ready.

The Hulston Library at the visitor center is one of the largest in the National Park System. The library has recently added 1800 square feet of exhibit space housing artifacts, government records, books, diaries, maps, and journals. There is also a gift shop in the park for souvenirs and books about the history of the Civil War.
