KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo couple convicted of child abuse for attacks that left a 2-month-old with multiple broken bones have been given sentences ranging from probation to prison.

Paul Preston and Norene Burkhead were charged last year after the baby arrived at a Kalamazoo hospital with injuries including a fractured skull and broken rib, arm and leg bones.

Investigators say the injuries were inflicted by the boy’s father Preston. Burkhead, the child`s mother, was charged for lying to doctors about the abuse.

Both appeared in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court earlier this week for sentencing. Preston was given 5 to 25 years in prison for first degree child abuse.

Burkhead was placed on probation for one year on a misdemeanor conviction of fourth-degree child abuse. She received credit for one day in jail.
