AUSTIN, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a record $148 billion investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure, of which $1.24 billion will be allocated for the Amarillo district.

According to officials, $104 billion of the investment will be part of a 10-year transportation plan by the Texas Department of Transportation to improve safety, address congestion and preserve roadways.

“Strengthening our roadways and transportation infrastructure is critical for Texas to remain the Best State for Business in the nation,” said Governor Abbott. “With the adoption of this record-breaking $148 billion transportation investment, Texas will continue to meet the needs of Texans in rural, urban, and metropolitan communities while also improving roadway congestion and safety.

Officials said many of the 2025 Unified Transportation Program projects are roadways segments identified on Texas’ 100 Most Congested Roadways list. Projects will see an increase in funding of $1.9 billion for completed, under-construction and planned non-tolled projects since 2015.

TxDOT officials note that roads across the Texas Panhandle will benefit from this investment. Major projects will include:

    • Construction of northbound to westbound and eastbound to southbound direct connectors from I-27 to South Loop 335, as well as a third-level bridge
    • Widening of U.S. Highway 87 in Hartley and Moore counties
    • Upgrading the southwest section of Loop 335 to a freeway

TxDOT officials said the adoption of the 2025 UTP comes after Texans were able to voice their opinions on the projects in the community. The UTP will also include investments in public transportation, maritime, aviation and rail. More information on the UTP projects can be found on TxDOT’s website.
