A white teenager has been sentenced to 18 months in juvenile custody in connection to a racist attack against a Black student at a Kansas high school, per KSHB .

The sentencing comes after the November 2023 attack against Black student Brey'anna Brown at Shawnee Mission East High School in Kansas City.

Cellphone footage showed a white teenager, identified as Nicholas Rosaly , hurling racial slurs at Brown before the two engaged in a physical altercation in the high school's hallway.

The attack left Brown with a broken nose. Rosaly sustained a concussion and an eye injury. Both students were suspended from school, prompting protests over the administration's handling of the incident.

Protestors called for the white student to face hate crime charges. Rosaly's father told local outlets that the N-word is “ugly, hateful, mean, but he didn't believe his son's actions were racially motivated.

“I’m upset. My son hit a girl. That’s one, but two, I was mad that he opened his mouth or anything of that sort because he should just wait and get a teacher,” the father previously said.

Authorities charged Rosaly with aggravated battery, to which he pleaded guilty last month.

Brown said she was “very happy to hear” about Rosaly's guilty plea, but she remains traumatized from the incident.

“It put us through a lot of stress and it just made me feel like I wasn’t safe anywhere I would be at school in the hallways and stuff,” Brown said.
