Three surprise cut candidates who can help the Kansas City Chiefs get back to the Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs' roster is set as they prepare to head to training camp in less than a month, but it is far from etched in stone.

Positional battles, as well as dreaded injuries, will play out over several weeks of a hot, grueling camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. General manager Brett Veach is always keeping an eye on talent across the league as he continues to assemble the best team possible.

Our A to Z staff named a potential surprise cut candidate for every team . Remember, just because a player gets released doesn't mean he can't catch on and do well somewhere else. Here are three players who, if cut by their team, could be a good fit for the Chiefs as they pursue their quest for a three-peat.

San Fransisco 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell

Injuries and the addition of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey have gotten Mitchell lost in the shuffle on the 49ers' depth chart. However, it was just three years ago that Mitchell came out of nowhere and racked up 1,000 yards from scrimmage as a rookie for S.F.

He has been a solid depth piece since then and is still just 26 years old. The Chiefs could use some insurance behind starter Isiah Pacheco, and Mitchell could instantly be the second-best RB on the roster if acquired.

New Orleans Saints Edge Isaiah Foskey

Foskey is entering just his second season in the NFL after being selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He could already be on the roster bubble after a tough luck rookie year, missing seven games due to a pulled quad. He'll now face an uphill climb of competition against a talented Saints' defensive line.

If New Orleans decides to part ways with Foskey, a change of scenery and a new coaching staff might be all he needs to get up and running. Veach is known for taking flyers on guys who are still young and were high draft picks. Foskey is an agile athlete who also has special teams ace abilities, having blocked four punts in college.

    Houston Texans WR Robert Woods

There's no doubt that the Chiefs improved their wide receiver corps this offseason with the additions of Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy, but there's still plenty of room for quality depth. The Chiefs are still living a bit dangerously as they are banking on guys like Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman, who have been very inconsistent throughout their careers, to contribute in 2024.

There is also the looming multi-game suspension of second year receiver Rashee Rice. Woods would be a perfect replacement while Rice is out. He is an 11-year veteran who can lineup anywhere and be a sure-handed target. Even when Rice returns from suspension, Woods would excellent depth and a great veteran presence for the receiver room.
