KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Fourth of July celebrations aren’t over yet and Kansas City area hospitals have already treated dozens of patients with firework injuries.
According to a spokesperson from Children’s Mercy, 19 kids have been treated for firework injuries, primarily to their hands and eyes. University Health has also treated 10 patients with firework-related injuries.
How to safely dispose of Fourth of July fireworks, multiple fires in KC area If you plan to continue the Independence Day celebrations into the weekend, here are some ways to keep you and your children safe:
Proper Safety Measures :
- Watch fireworks from a safe distance.
- Avoid loose-fitting clothing while using fireworks.
- Do not light fireworks near dry grass, brush, leaves or flammable substances.
- Don’t light fireworks indoors.
- Point fireworks away from people, pets and homes.
Avoid Sparklers :
- Small children have little arms that are usually too short to hold sparklers at a proper distance.
- The AAP suggests waving a flag instead of a sparkler for children under 5 years old.
Ways to prevent injuries:
- Have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Know how to use a fire extinguisher.
- Stand several feet away from the fireworks.
- If a firework does not go off, pour water on it and dispose of the remains.
