Royals land college baseball’s best two-way player, strengthen bullpen

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals had the sixth pick in today’s MLB Draft . The team used that pick to select two-way Florida Gators star Jac Caglianone.

Caglianone was projected by many to go in the top five of the 2024 draft. He played three seasons for the Gators, hitting 75 home runs, making him the Gators’ all-time home run leader.

During the 2024 season, Caglianone hit a homer in nine straight games, which tied an NCAA record.

The college star’s pitching career numbers include a 12-6 record, 4.55 ERA, 148.1 IP and 170 K. He also won the John Olerud Award for 2-way player of the year in 2024.

While Caglianone is most likely done on the mound, the Royals will begin to develop his hitting ability for the Major Leagues.

The Royals also had the 41st pick in the second round, which the team used to select David Shields. Shields is a 17-year-old left-handed pitcher from Mt. Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania.

Shields was a two-sport athlete, both the starting pitcher and quarterback for his high school teams. Shields is currently committed to the University of Miami.
