Kansas City Chiefs 2024 NFL Training Camp Preview
The Kansas City Chiefs are going to try to do it again. As the team gets ready for the 2024 NFL Training Camp period, we’re going to preview the biggest questions about where the club stands. Let’s get right into it!
Three Position Battles To Watch:
1: Left Tackle: Wanya Morris vs. Kingsley Suamataia
Donovan Smith was not re-signed and the Chiefs are stuck with Jawaan Taylor after he sucked coming over from Jacksonville. The last time the Chiefs were vulnerable, they got picked apart on the offensive line. Left tackle right now is a huge question mark hanging over the team.
The good news is Brett Veach wisely plucked Kingsley Suamataia during the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s probably not quite ready to play yet but he was one of my favorite prospects in the class for a reason. Early reports indicate Kingsley is taking the job and running with it. If that started happening already at OTA’s, maybe the former BYU product will be ready to go by Week 1.
2: Cornerback: Nazeeh Johnson, Jaylen Watson, Boye-Doe Ekow, Kelvin Joseph, Joshua Williams, Kamal Hadden, Keith Taylor
The Chiefs lost L’Jarius Snead in one of the most poorly made decisions of the offseason (which was broken down more eloquently during the War Room Series ). It looks like it’s going to have a ripple effect on the entire secondary.
Trent McDuffie, a nice slot corner, is now going to be asked to take on that number one role. Something I’m skeptical of. Steve Spagnuolo already admitted that the Chiefs can’t replace Snead, which tells a lot of the story here. Charmarri Conner should do just fine filling that slot role. Everything else is up for grabs.
I have no idea who emerges from that group listed above. I guess we’ll find out soon.
The Chiefs led the NFL in drops last year with 44. Regardless of what you think about this group, the additions of Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy should help. It remains to be seen how those two produce. The sad part is the group responsible for leading the NFL in drops is largely intact.
Is Rashee Rice going to be suspended? Why hasn’t he already been?
Skyy Moore stinks. Will the Chiefs finally understand it and cut bait?
There is no way Kadarius Toney is still on this roster by Week 1, right?
Re-signing Mecole Hardman tells you everything you need to know. They know they have problems with this position.
Ready To Breakout: Trey Smith
It’s a contract year for Trey Smith who has emerged as a quality guard since being drafted in the 6th round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Except he had no business going that late because the NFL is truly dumb as rocks. Smith was the number one rated player coming out of high school but battled some medical issues in college. He’s finally starting to enter his prime now. A year from now, he’s going to land a big pay day for someone else. It’s only a matter of time.
Rookie To Watch: Emani Bailey / Carson Steele
I don’t know who needs to hear this but the Chiefs are a run-first team. For as great as Patrick Mahomes is, the Chiefs realized last year they’re better when the offense goes through the ground game. It’s just a fact. Isiah Pacheco had 99 touches in four playoff games last year.
We know by now that Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a big waste of time. Can one of these rookies carve a role here? Emani Bailey had some moments at the Senior Bowl but is slow and mostly can only affect the game in the passing area. Carson Steele has more of a power element that’s missing from the team. Maybe there is a hidden fantasy gem that later reveals himself by Week 10.
Fantasy Sleeper: Marquise Brown
This is going to go one of two ways. Brown is either going to disappoint or we’re going to sit here a year from now and say… how the hell did the rest of the league let the Chiefs get their hands on him? I think it’s going to be the latter. I love Brown in fantasy this year, especially in best ball leagues.
Mahomes seems very invested in making this work. Brown has been following Mahomes sitting courtside with him at NBA games and the two have constantly been training together. The two played Big 12 football around the same period of time in college. I think this will work better than people think and he could even have WR2 upside.
