Should the Kansas City Chiefs trade for 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk?

The San Francisco 49ers and receiver Brandon Aiyuk are far apart enough on contract terms to make Aiyuk request a trade from the team that selected him 25th overall in the 2020 draft. Aiyuk made his feelings known to the right people on Tuesday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that the 49ers have no intention of trading Aiyuk, but what if that's just posturing to up the price? If Aiyuk wants to be paid like one of the best receivers in the NFL, that means another team will not only have to give up players or draft capital to get him, but then sign him to a contract that will probably exceed $25 million per year .

That's a spicy meatball, as they say, but should the Kansas City Chiefs be interested if the 49ers are willing to transact?

Right now, the Chiefs have a bit more than $15 million in cap space for the 2024 league year, so they could backload a deal and move some things around. And there's no doubt that Aiyuk would be a tremendous addition to Andy Reid's offense. He's already familiar with the option and motion concepts the Chiefs love to use based on his time with Kyle Shanahan, and as much as general manager Brett Veach has done to redefine what was a sub-par receiver corps in 2024, the thought of Aiyuk and Patrick Mahomes teaming up kinda makes your head spin.

So yes, if the Chiefs could find a way to make it financially feasible, adding Brandon Aiyuk would do a lot toward the ultimate goal of doing something no other team has ever done -- winning three straight Super Bowls.
