Beleaguered WR working at different position in Chiefs camp

Is Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney considering a position change?

On his X account, PJ Green of WDAF-TV in Kansas City shared a clip of Toney working at running back and running a speed option with quarterback Patrick Mahomes during Sunday's practice.

Per Pro Football Focus, Toney has lined up on 206 run plays in three seasons with the Chiefs and New York Giants, rushing for 119 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. While he's probably not switching positions, the 25-year-old should do whatever he can to stay on the field.

Kansas City hoped Toney would become a No. 1 option after he caught a touchdown and returned a punt for 65 yards in Super Bowl LVII vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. But the former first-round pick was disappointing in 2023.

On 38 targets in 13 games last season, Toney had one TD catch and five drops. He was also a healthy scratch in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.

This offseason, Kansas City added competition for Toney, signing free-agent WR Marquise Brown ( one-year deal worth $7M ) and drafting Texas' Xavier Worthy (pick No. 28). Worthy already impressed during Sunday's practice, catching a long TD pass from Mahomes.

In a Sunday news conference, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid revealed little about Toney's future with the club.

"He worked today," Reid said of Toney. "He did a good job when he was in there, and we'll see. Just like the other guys, he's out there competing. We'll see how he does."

It appears Toney is on the roster bubble. Releasing him would only incur a $2.53M cap hit, via Spotrac. He should keep showcasing his versatility to avoid getting cut.
