    Man charged in Kansas City woman’s killing that led to 8 hour standoff

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 70-year-old Kansas City, Missouri man is facing charges following an eight hour standoff with police after a woman was found shot and killed inside a house off Blue Ridge Boulevard.

    Jackson County prosecutors this week charged Juan Maiden with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action.

    According to court documents, just after 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, Kansas City police officers responded to a shooting near Thompson and Booth Avenue. There was also a call to police that a woman had been shot inside the house at the same location.

    When officer’s arrived on scene they were informed by two witnesses that the victim, identified as 54-year-old D L O’Hara, was inside the residence and was shot by Maiden, who was still inside.

    Man arrested after three-and-a-half-hour standoff in Kansas City

    KCPD officers were able to break out a window and enter the residence where they located the victim in the hallway. The victim had an apparent gunshot wound to her head, according to court documents.

    The victim was taken to North Kansas City Hospital by ambulance where she was later pronounced dead.

    A witness who was with the victim inside the home stated she was with the victim and Maiden. The witness said Maiden entered the room and shot the victim unprovoked with a handgun.

    Court documents say the witness then attacked Maiden to defend the victim which led to a physical altercation and was able to knock the gun out of Maiden’s hand. The witness then grabbed a nearby computer printer and began beating the suspect over the head with it before realizing the gun was un the ground. The witness grabbed the weapon and attempted to shoot Maiden but the gun was empty.

    During a standoff with the suspect, officers located Maiden in the basement suffering from injuries to his had and face. He also appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, according to court documents.

    Maiden made his first court appearance Thursday in Jackson County court.
