Eyebrows were raised when former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden was spotted as Chiefs training camp on Sunday .

Gruden spent close to eight years total with Kansas City's arch enemy Raiders, first from 1998-2201, then again from 2018-2021. He resigned as Las Vegas' head coach after the NFL uncovered several inappropriate emails that he had sent over the years. In 2023 Gruden served in a coaching consultant role with the New Orleans Saints.

Gruden returned to Chiefs camp on Monday, and coach Andy Reid explained to the media why Gruden's been hanging around.

"He (Gruden) loves football," Reid said. So, and he and I go way back - 30 years. So, we've known each other a long time. So, it's good to get him up here. He's always got good input on things. Very smart, very good football - great football coach. I enjoy having him around, he has great energy."

It really shouldn't come as that big of a shock that Gruden made a couple visits to Chiefs camp. As Reid said, he and Gruden have been friends for a very long time and coached together during their days with the Green Bay Packers. It's doubtful that there's anything else much to it than that.

Gruden's second stint as the Raiders' coach was a bust, going 22-31 in just over three seasons. The last sustained success that they've had was from Gruden's first stint as their coach in which he went 40-28 in four seasons (including the playoffs).

In a cruel twist of fate for Raiders fans, Gruden beat them in Super Bowl XXVII with the Bucs. While he continues to pursue a lawsuit against the NFL over his leaked emails, Gruden is serving as an advisor for the Milano Seamen of the NFL Europe League.
