SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The IBP Ice Center was built in 1997, and after being in operation for almost 30 years, a massive renovation project is nearly ready.

The center announced the project back in July of 2021 and was completed on May 1, 2024. Siouxlanders visiting the facility will be walking into a new lobby and new locker rooms along with a weight room this summer.

Recreational Supervisor John Byrnes said that the next step is just putting in the finishing touches.

“We need to fill out and furnish our new lobby that we are standing in, we need to get our hockey players accustomed to the new locker room,” Brynes said. “We can’t wait, and we know there is going to be a ton of excitement about it, it’s a great project.”

Byrnes also said that the project is a win for Siouxland’s thriving hockey community.

“This new project is great for so many reasons,” he said. “Number one. the public is just going to love the expansion, it’s going to feel bigger and a hockey space that is appropriate for the size of the facility, but more importantly our hockey players are now going to have locker rooms for them, and for the first time we are going to have a dedicated girls’ locker room.”

This project has been in the works for several years and took many groups to come together to make it possible.

“This was a long time coming,” Bryne said. “This was over a million dollar project, a lot of different private groups that have come together to fundraise for this, and the city was in for some money as well. A lot of groups coming together to recognize the need and to update and renovate this building for the first time in a long time. The hockey community is going to benefit as well as the general public coming in to use our ice is going to benefit.”

The expansion consists of a large public area for the lobby, as well as a concession stand. Multiple locker rooms are a part of the expansion, including a women’s locker room, a dry room for weight training, and a couple of different locker rooms for varsity and junior varsity for the Sioux City Metros.

Byrnes said that the renovated ice center will be open to the public over the summer and that they expect for the public to instantly start using the renovated spaces.
