SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Parents, students and teachers gathered at Monday night’s Sioux City Community Schools board meeting to discuss vocal music staffing.

It was standing room only at the meeting. The board of directors heard from at least 15 to 20 speakers about the staff at East High School and East Middle School for the 2024-25 school year.

Board members heard multiple options on ideas for vocal music staffing. Board member Earl Miller proposed a vote for two full-time teachers at the both schools. There was no second, which meant the proposal was dead.

KCAU 9 spoke with a parent with a student in choir afterwards.

“Obviously we’re disappointed tonight that we didn’t get a second on the motion on the table to move forward on that vote, but I don’t think the work is done,” parent Christie Finnegan said. “We as a parent group are willing to be at the table and collaborate and advocate. We know there are constraints to the budget.”

Parents and students gathered more than 665 signatures in a petition to be able to discuss the matter with board members.
