SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — With Memorial Day weekend nearly here, the Iowa Poison Control Center is warning and encouraging Siouxland parents to pay extra attention to young kids if they plan on celebrating with alcohol.

Many co-branded alcoholic drinks have been hitting the market, such as Sunny D Vodka or Hard Mountain Dew. This can make it difficult to keep kids from accidentally drinking alcohol.

“Be aware of these products now being much more common,” Iowa Poison Control Center Assistant Director Grant Houselog said. “Sometimes the language that they’re using on the packaging, they’ll say that it’s alcoholic in someway, shape, or form. But sometimes it’s hard this or spiked that or something, that’s maybe not always the most direct way to alert you that it is an alcoholic beverage.”

Experts suggest having non-alcoholic drinks out where anyone can grab them and having the adult beverages kept inside on a higher shelf.
