SD campers making memories Memorial Day weekend

LINCOLN COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) — While Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military, for many families, it’s also a time to spend extra time together outside.

For many people who camp at Newton Hills State Park, spending their Memorial Day weekend there is a tradition.

“We usually camp on Memorial Day, I’m pretty sure,” Isaac Nussbaum said.

“We do Memorial Day weekend here every year,” Norah and Jack Devitt said.

From campers, to cabins, and tents, families make sure they are spending the weekend outdoors, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

“Everyone’s camping so you can meet new people and play in the parks and everything,” Nussbaum said.

“Looking at all the really big campers and comparing them to ours,” Norah said.

For Norah and Jack Devitt, some of their favorite activities revolve around the campfire.

“We eat s’mores for breakfast,” Norah said.

“So we all take a marshmallow roasting in the campfire and the other three are judging and they judge the marshmallow is pretty, pretty fun and delicious,” Jack said.

However, if there is one thing these campers could change about the weekend, it would probably be the weather.

“It’s cold and Memorial Day weather is usually unpredictable. So it’s colder than usual, though,” Nussbaum said.

“Usually it’s not as windy and it’s more sunny,” Sophia Coomes said.

But even with the cold weather, they’ll be making memories this Memorial Day weekend.

According to AAA, over 40 million people will be traveling this weekend.
