If you talk to people that work at an animal rescue shelter, you’ll learn quickly that a disturbing number of pets are abandoned, abused or worse by their owners.

Animal shelters would prefer that every pet finds their forever home on the first shot, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.

One shelter in West Virginia has shared a note they received from someone who just couldn’t take care of their dog anymore.

The Fayette County Humane Society in Fayetteville, West Virginia shared a note and photo of Finnegan.

In the note, the person says they lost their job and now have to travel for work. They live alone, so they’re unable to take care of Finnegan.

“I’m sorry + Thank you,” the note reads.

In a Facebook post, the Humane Society said that Finnegan is “safe with us.”

Speaking to KDKA Radio, the Humane Society says that the owner did the right things but shouldn’t dropped off the animal during operating hours.

But, “we are happy they trusted us enough to know that Finnegan would be safe and we would get to him and provide him the care that he needs going forward.”

While Finnegan is in West Virginia, there are plenty of dogs and cats in need of a home in the Pittsburgh area.
