Cole Custer's road to NASCAR redemption is finally complete

When Cole Custer took the checkered flag at the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series finale, many thought that they had just seen the young driver turn his final laps as a NASCAR Cup Series driver.

Following a rough three-season stint with Stewart-Haas Racing at NASCAR's highest level, Custer was demoted to the NASCAR Xfinity Series for 2023. With short-track ace Ryan Preece taking over Custer's No. 41 car, it was up to Custer prove that he was worthy of another chance to race in the Cup Series.

Custer decided to not waste any time, winning the 2023 Xfinity Series championship. In 2024, he's been the most consistent driver in the Xfinity Series field, collecting his first victory of the season on July 13 at Pocono.

And on Saturday morning, Custer made it official: He'll be back in the Cup Series in 2025.

The Ladera Ranch, California, native will pilot the No. 41 car for the Haas Factory Team, with his father, Joe Custer, running the team.

Last names and money may make the move seem like nothing more than the product of nepotism, but make no mistake, Custer has earned his shot to prove his worth in the Cup Series. Ryan Preece has put forth similar numbers to Custer in the No. 41 car and Custer's win at Kentucky in 2020 proves that he's capable of competing at the sport's highest level.

First chances are rare in NASCAR and second chances rarer still. Custer's first opportunity certainly didn't pan out like he wanted it to, but as an older, more experienced driver, he has a chance to re-write his chapter in Cup Series history.

The Haas Factory Team likely won't be a playoff contender in 2025, but don't be surprised if Custer is able to shock the world with a few solid runs. Now that he has his second chance, he'll be quick to try and show the NASCAR world why he earned it in the first place.
