Local officials hope latest truancy bill increases attendance in Kentucky schools
PADUCAH — Kentucky’s latest truancy law requires that schools alert the county attorney’s office when a student has 15 or more unexcused absences. House Bill 611, which took effect this month, is meant to combat a rise in truancy throughout the state — where close to 30% of students were absent for 10% or more of the 2022-2023 school year.
Homeless & Housing Coalition of Kentucky on tour
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It’s a pressing issue for many Americans and even more so for those who live on the streets, homelessness and affordable housing. The Homeless & Housing Coalition of Kentucky came to town on Wednesday to talk with those who have a vested interest in affordable housing and homelessness and hoping to get some insight on how to fix a big problem in Kentucky. Adrienne Bush and George Eklund with the Homeless & Housing Coalition of Kentucky and the Coalition for the Homeless in Louisville have traveled to Louisville, Lexington, Paducah and Bowling Green so far but still have two more stops to make in northern Kentucky and Morehead to finish out their tour.

Construction work on Berger Road and Lone Oak Road begins Monday
A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans daytime closures along the west end of KY 1310 (Berger Road) in Paducah starting Monday. The daytime closures are for a project to enhance pedestrian and driver safety along KY 1310 (Berger Road) from US 45 (Lone Oak Road) extending eastward to the Oak Street intersection, a distance of just under 1/2 mile.

Commissioners give Paducah residents new option to pay property taxes
The Paducah Board of Commissioners has passed an ordinance giving taxpayers an additional way to pay city real estate or property taxes. At Tuesday's meeting, Commissioners gave passage to a measure that would implement what they call Interactive Voice Response for the paying of tax bills over the phone. The number would make paying property and real estate taxes available at any time. Taxpayers could use the Interactive Voice Response and pay with an electronic check or credit card without having to give that information to someone in the city finance office.
