MUSTANG, Okla. ( KFOR ) — Rachel Mercer said she was sitting outside talking to her father on the phone Thursday night when things took a scary turn.

“I heard three gunshots just right down the road, and when I turned to go back inside to tell my daughter to stay inside, I saw one of the cop cars come racing down the road,” said Mercer. “Just very unsettling being so close to home.”

Moments later, officers flooded South Mustang Road, near Mustang High School. This happened around 7:30 p.m.

“This is not a good situation at all for anybody,” said Mustang Police Chief Mike Wallace. “This is a safe community. This is a very uncommon call.”

The OSBI is leading the investigation. According to the agency, the incident began as a Mustang Police officer responding to a welfare check.

“The officer made contact with an adult male. During that interaction, the officer provided verbal commands to the suspect, however he did not comply and advanced towards the officer. An officer-involved shooting occurred,” said the OSBI’s press release.

We now know the man who died is 41-year-old Juan Barbosa. It’s not clear if he was armed.

“In terms of other details that led up to that shooting, we still have to look over all of that,” said Hunter McKee, an OSBI spokesman.

    No one else was injured.

Neighbors told KFOR off camera that Barbosa didn’t live in the area. Mercer said the area is typically quiet.

“It’s just an uneasy situation,” said Mercer. “Nothing like this ever happens.”

The officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave.
