Since the 2020 pandemic, the economic strain has still been felt across local small businesses in our community, but we can help.

The business space is dominated by the convenience of big-box retailers and online giants, making it easy to overlook the importance of shopping local . However, our communities’ vitality often hinges on small businesses’ success. From the cozy café on the corner to a family-run bookstore in Canyon Country, these establishments are the lifeblood of our neighborhoods, fostering economic resilience and community cohesion.

A purchase at a local bakery or boutique is an investment in our community’s economic well-being. Small businesses are often owned and operated by community members and are more likely to give back.

“We’ve donated $500 to Bridge to Home and we also gave them a pallet of food and water that they’ve been needing,” said Brenda Gomez, Store Manager for Grocery Outlet . “Another nonprofit that we donated to is Single Mothers Outreach. They help single mothers and fathers, and we donated $1,000 to them.”

Unlike the big-box stores, local businesses can often serve as gathering places where neighbors can connect, share stories, and forge meaningful relationships.

This year, instead of buying from Amazon, Target or Walmart, Santa Clarita residents are invited to stop by a local shop.

    • Instead of shopping for groceries at a big-box store such as Vons or Ralphs, head to Grocery Outlet, offering lots of great name-brand items at excellent prices.
    • Rather than getting coffee from a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, grab a cup at Honu Coffee or Havana Savannah.
    • Instead of getting dinner from a large chain such as Olive Garden, Red Robin or Chipotle, grab some food from Salt Creek Grille or Mom Can Cook Thai.
    • Rather than grabbing drinks from a chain such as Chili’s Bar & Grill, head to Pocock Brewing Public House or The Newhall Refinery.
    • Swap out a membership to a large gym such as L.A. Fitness for a membership at Mend Cryotherapy, offering a wide variety of sales throughout the coming week on services and products geared towards treating stress and anxiety, as well as improving the immune system.
    • Instead of getting a suit at a chain such as Men’s Warehouse, head over to J. David’s in Valencia for your men’s fashion needs.
    • Instead of getting furniture from Ashley’s Furniture or Bob’s Discount, go to A Royal Suite Furniture.
