In spite of a lack of a Superbloom, the Santa Clarita Valley has seen more rainfall this year than Seattle, Washington, making it the moistest back-to-back year since the late 1800s.

Since the beginning of this year , Los Angeles County – including the Santa Clarita Valley – has received a total of 15.77 inches of rain thus far, while Seattle has only seen 12.94 inches, according to data from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Typically, the Pacific Northwestern city receives around 16 inches of rain by this time of year, but its current total falls far short of neighboring Portland, which has received 17.04 inches of rain, according to the NWS.

The excessive rainfall in the City of Santa Clarita and surrounding counties has not been seen since weather records began in 1877.

The unusual wet California weather can be credited to a natural climate event called El Niño.

    What is El Niño?

El Niño is a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean where warm water is pushed back east, toward the west coast of the Americas. Cold water rises from the depths to replace the warm water in a process called upwelling.

During this event, the northern United States and Canada are dryer and warmer than usual. But the Gulf Coast is wetter than usual and has increased flooding, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
