During the City of Santa Clarita’s planning commission meeting on Tuesday, commissioners discussed the planning of the Valencia Town Center Mall.

The mall was purchased by the Dallas-based developer Centennial but is yet to have their plans approved.

During the meeting, a few minor topics were discussed, but the issue that was at the forefront was parking.

One of the parking issues dealt with the residents and the specifics of how that is going to be situated.

“We do not have a site plan that demonstrates where parking will go currently but as developments come in, we will review them for parking,” said Dave Peterson, Senior planner with the Santa Clarita Planning Division and project manager of the Town Center specifics. “We do not have an existing exhibit of where the parking will go currently but there will have to be enough parking at a rate and a location that satisfies the plan requirements similar to what is now in place in other parking areas.”

While there isn’t a solid plan of where parking will be located and how the residential and commercial parking will be divided there were already questions concerning the matter.

One concern was that residents would park in the commercial areas. This could lead to residents not requesting parking spots and giving a false idea of how many spots are needed for residents.

One suggestion that was made is to have signs stating no overnight parking in the commercial parking area.

While that can solve the potential issue of residents parking in commercial areas, it also raises additional problems.

One issue that may arise is that if residents ever have overnight guests, they would have to get an overnight parking pass.

Another potential problem that was discussed was with employees of the surrounding businesses.

It can be problematic because many businesses close late and open early, which inevitably leads to commercial parking areas being used nearly all the time.

So, until the building plans are more concrete, the discussion of parking will be up in the air.
