Joby Aviation takes 523-mile hydrogen-electric flight above Monterey County
MARINA – In June, Joby Aviation successfully completed a 523-mile flight above Marina of its first-of-its-kind hydrogen-electric technology demonstrator aircraft, and in July, California became the first state to officially launch a Hydrogen Hub, with both developments having a stake in furthering the state’s goal of cutting pollution and expanding clean energy.
Swift response contains Metz Fire to 1,100 acres in South Monterey County
GREENFIELD — South Monterey County faced an unexpected challenge in the heart of a warm summer afternoon Tuesday. Around 2 p.m. on July 23, the usually tranquil fields near Greenfield were suddenly ablaze as a fire broke out on Metz Road. Fueled by strong winds, the fire rapidly spread to an alarming 1,100 acres by evening with only 5% containment.

Kim Stemler Passes Reins at MCVGA to Helena Welsh
July 23, 2024 – We’ve known for some time that Kim Stemler, who has stewarded the Monterey County Vintners and Growers Association since 2012 as executive director, recently took on a new job with the Carmel Foundation. It was just a matter of finding the right fit to replace her at MCVGA and it appears that the glass slipper will now be worn by Helena Welsh—a long-time resident of California’s Lake County.
Greenfield cancer survivor leads Kiddie Kapers Parade as grand marshal
GREENFIELD — Greenfield’s Kelly Mata Navarro, a 12-year-old cancer survivor, was the grand marshal for this year’s California Rodeo Salinas’ Kiddie Kapers Parade. Navarro waved to the thousands of people lining the sides of South Main Street on July 14 from the back of a 1966 Ford Mustang, near the front of the parade lineup. Parade participants were mostly youth, ranging from babies in strollers up to a high school marching band.
Governor orders urgent action on homeless encampments statewide
– Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order today directing state agencies to urgently address homeless encampments “while respecting the dignity and safety of Californians experiencing homelessness,” according to a press release from the governor’s office. The governor’s order follows the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Grants Pass v Johnson and urges local governments to use substantial state funding to take similar action.
California’s $20 minimum wage leads 89% of fast-food restaurants to reduce hours
The minimum wage for fast-food workers in California jumped to $20 an hour on April 1, a $4 pay bump for 553,000 fast workers.
