Everything You Need to Know About the 2024 Mackinac Bridge Walk
The Mackinac Bridge Walk is the event that truly signals the end of summer in Michigan and now we have details about what's happening for this year's walk. The Mackinac Bridge Authority released all of the information for the 2024 walk on July 10, and there are a few changes to be aware of this year - mainly, that the starting point on the St. Ignace side of the bridge has changed. The Bridge Authority has decided to move the starting point on the north end of the bridge from the Mackinac Bridge Authority building to Bridge View Park to cut down on the amount of people walking across I-75.
Soo, Detour Village to be sites of AAM pilot project
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— An eastern Upper Peninsula project has received more than $512,000 in state funding to further Advanced Aerial Mobility technology in Michigan. AAM is a new type of transportation that uses electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft to move people and cargo between places not currently or easily served by surface transportation or existing aviation modes.
International Bridge Walk was canceled this year but will return in June 2025
SAULT STE. MARIE — The International Bridge Administration and the chambers of commerce of Sault Ste. Marie Michigan and Ontario on Friday announced the next International Bridge Walk will take place Saturday, June 28, 2025. This year’s walk, which had been slated for June 29, was canceled due to inclement weather. “We deeply regret the cancellation of the 2024 walk,” said International Bridge general director Peter Petainen. “But with heavy rains and a number of thunderstorms in the area, we acted out of an abundance of caution to put the safety of participants first.” Sault Michigan Chamber director Tony Haller and Sault Ontario interim CEO Don Mitchell expressed thanks to everyone who worked to prepare for the bridge walk this year.

Sault Ste. Marie Police add bike patrols downtown thanks to grant
SAULT STE. MARIE — On Thursday, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department announced a new way to patrol and interact with the public downtown. Four full-time officers will be on bike patrol in addition to their regular vehicle patrol duties. Each officer recently completed a rigorous 32-hour police mountain bike training course at Oakland Community College. Grant funding helped the department purchase two new bikes and a bike rack. Additional grant funding will help pay for the officers’ work hours. “We believe that this is going to increase the ability to interact with the community and talk to business owners, talk to the public...in the downtown area and residential areas – just have more of a one-on-one engagement with our community,” said Chief Wes Bierling.
