PORT BARRE, La. ( KLFY ) — Storms hit fast, but so did the residents in Port Barre that quickly got to work with clearing any debris and making the roadways a little safer.

Police Chief Deon Boudreaux in Port Barre said the weather was not as bad as they had expected but still caused a lot of damage.

“Not as bad as we anticipated, but the weather did come in real fast and real violent all at once,” said Boudreaux.

Boudreaux says the storm began early this morning as many were preparing to go to work. While the storm didn’t last long, it left limbs scattered across most of the roadways in the town, motivating several residents to head out and do their part to clear the streets.

“They woke up, they got outside and started cleaning the trees off the roadway. Right now, all the roadways and put back passable,” said Boudreaux.

Now, with most of the roadways being cleared, the only significant damage really that we have to report from Port Barre is actually this house right here, which come to find out is a rental property with no injuries reported. But as you can see, this tree made quite a dent,” said Boudreaux.

Chief Boudreaux said as soon as the rain stopped and the skies started to clear up, residents from all across the town got together and started chopping up trees and clearing up roadways to make their community a little bit safer.

“People are the same way. I mean, when you were around earlier seeing that we probably had five or six trees down across some of our streets. But then you make a couple of blocks come back and they’re already picked up. Many people work hard, they come out here, they don’t sit back. They know the roads got to be cleared away,” Boudreaux explained.

Now, as most of the damage has been cleared out and most of the roadways are safe to drive on, the only significant damage left in Port Barre is the house that still has quite a bit of damage to clean up.
