WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — The return of Baylor University students to Waco each semester brings a significant boost to local businesses, invigorating the community and economy.

As the academic year kicks off, establishments like Baris Italian Restaurant and George’s Restaurant are experiencing the ultimate uplift, revitalizing their operations after the slower summer months.

Jimmy Imeri, Baris’s co-owner, highlights Baylor students’ crucial role in their business.

“We love it when Baylor is back. They show so much love, they show up. The summer was a bit slower, but we felt the impact immediately when they returned,” said Imeri.

Despite the seasonal fluctuations, Imeri remains optimistic: “We’re blessed and content with what we have.”

George’s Restaurant, a staple since 1930, also feels the surge in business with the return of students.

    General Manager Rebecca Woods notes,

“We all look forward to this time of year. It allows us to meet new people and boosts jobs in the community,” said Woods.

When students return home for the summer the establishments see the shift, but many travelers still come to the establishment as they pass through Waco.

Kris Collins, Executive Vice President of Economic Development, underscores the broader economic impact.

“The return of Baylor students and other colleges like MCC, TSTC, Texas Tech, and Tarleton State provides a great boost for local businesses. E-commerce purchases further support local sales tax and the economy,” she said.

Collins also points out that Baylor contributes over $2 billion annually to the Waco/McLennan County economy.

In Waco, where local businesses like Baris and George’s thrive on the vibrancy brought by students, the start of the semester is more than just a return to academic routines—it’s a revival of local commerce and community spirit.
