SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — The extreme heat much of the nation has felt also takes its toll on transportation services.

School is back in session, meaning the buses are back up and running.

San Angelo ISD Transportation Director Lee Livingston said, “Anytime you have sunlight coming through the glass, it can be magnified.”

The large windshields on most buses increase the temperature inside. Even with running air conditioning, the extreme temperatures can strain the systems, requiring more maintenance trips.

SAISD wants to make sure drivers are prepared in any weather condition. Drivers are required to be re-certified every three years and part of that training is driving in adverse conditions.

Safety is the top priority on and off the bus for drivers and students. Livingston encourages students to bring water with them and walk in the shade as much as possible to and from bus stops in the extreme heat.
