    9/11 Memorial Events hosted in the Concho Valley

    SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) —Communities in the Concho Valley are gearing up to commemorate the Sep. 11, 2001 heroes and victims.

    According to a press release from the City of San Angelo, the San Angelo Police and Fire Department will host a public 9/11 memorial service on Sep. 11, at the 9/11 monument near Celebration Bridge along the Concho River. Next to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, 1 Love Street.

    Dedicated on Sep. 8, 2003, the local memorial honors the victims of the 2001 attacks and is one of the few memorials in Texas to feature a piece of steel from Ground Zero.

    After the original artifact was stolen in 2016, the Velez family donated a new steel piece from Ground Zero in 2017, which now serves as the heart of the monument.

    According to a social media post shared by Team Red, White and Blue, Team RWB will host its 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at San Angelo Stadium on Sunday, Sep. 8 from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

    Participants can expect to climb 2,200 stairs in honor of the heroic efforts of the first responders who ascended the World Trade Center and the 2,977 lives lost on that tragic day. The event is open to all ages, with a track available for those unable to climb. Free snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the event.

    First Responders from SAPD, TGSO, SAFD, and EMS will also be present for meet-and-greet opportunities. Entry is from the Johnson Street side of the stadium.

    According to a s ocial media post shared by the Ballinger Fire Department, the 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial 5K will take place on Saturday, Sep. 7, beginning at 8 a.m. with an early registration at 7 a.m. Hosted by the Ballinger Fire Department at 109 N 9th St, the event features a $35 registration fee and guarantees a t-shirt size for all participants.

    A drawing for prizes will also be held and Shannon Air Med will make a special landing at 7:45 a.m. Lunch will be provided and will include pulled pork sandwiches and tacos for all participants. First responders can join free of charge.
