SEC Finally Settles Debate About Whether Tennessee Or Texas Is The Real UT

Fans may finally have their answer to the ongoing debate between the University of Tennessee and University of Texas over which school is the real UT.

And it seems only fitting now that both teams play in the SEC that the dispute was decided by the conference itself when it announced its preseason All-SEC teams on Friday morning.

In the SEC’s official announcement, Tennessee offensive lineman Cooper May had the UT abbreviation next to his name while Texas offensive lineman Kelvin Banks had a TEX abbreviation next to his, seemingly deciding — at least in terms of what the conference higher-ups think — who the real UT is.

For historical reasons, it might be worth noting that the University of Tennessee was founded in 1794 while Texas was founded nearly 90 years later in 1883, seemingly giving the Vols dibs on the UT moniker.

Not that it matters much in the scheme of things, but Texas was picked to finish second in the SEC and Tennessee seventh in the preseason media poll.

Now, if only there were a simpler way to decide whether or not South Carolina or the University of Southern California was the real USC.
