Former Tennessee Vols star breaks an MLB record in electric fashion to continue dominant streak

Former Tennessee Volunteers baseball star pitcher Ben Joyce has been one of the best stories in the MLB this season. He started the season off shaky, but he has bounced back in tremendous fashion.

Now, he might already be one of the most effective relief pitchers in all of baseball. He's proving it night in and night out for the Los Angeles Angels. Joyce made MLB history on Saturday night.

Ben Joyce throws fastest pitch in the pitch-tracking era (104.7 MPH)

On the pitch, he also secured his first career MLB save. I have a sneaking suspicion it won't be his last at the pro level, either. He's electric and dominant.

The rookie fireballer has reeled off 22 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. It's a run that you don't see at the pro level often, at all, anymore.

Joyce has thrown 6 of MLB's top 10 hardest pitches in 2024 as well.

Joyce had a whopping 22.50 ERA when he entered the game on June 14. Since that date, he has not allowed a single run in 18 appearances for the Angels. He's basically been untouchable, and folks are starting to take notice.

The former Vols gunslinger is emerging as a top relief arm in the league, and that probably won't change anytime soon.

He deserves a long-term closer role if he continues anywhere near this sort of success at the MLB level. It's been a marvel to watch.
