FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — More than 10,000 students at Fayetteville schools returned to school on Tuesday, but this school year will be a little different.

Among the new things, the school district is implementing student IDs and lanyards. Students in fifth through 12th grade must have both with them every day.

The district says students will have to use their ID to swipe on and off the school bus thanks to a new software program.

The district is also starting a new plan to ban cell phones and smart devices during the school day.

“I think our teachers are very excited, distractions, details to work out, work through some of those kinks,” Fayetteville School District Superintendent John Mulford said.

Mulford also said they are working with the city to add a parking structure to the west side of the high school campus.

There are currently 550 parking spaces available but they have more than 2,000 students.
They hope to have it completed in about two years.
