    Man arrested in connection to fatal shooting in Long Beach

    A man was in custody Wednesday for allegedly shooting another man to death in Long Beach, police said.

    Officers were sent to the 5900 block of Lime Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday "regarding multiple gunshots heard and a person who was shot inside of his garage," according to the Long Beach Police Department.

    "Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body," police said. "Officers rendered medical aid and attempted life saving measures until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel." scene.

    Jeffrey Poorman, 44, of Long Beach, died at the scene, police said.

    "Detectives believe the suspect and victim were together when the suspect shot the victim," police said. "Detectives determined the victim and the suspect were previously known to one another. The investigation to determine the circumstances and motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

    "Through their investigation, homicide detectives identified the suspect as Mathew De Diego, a 19-year-old resident of Long Beach," police said. "He was located near the 5000 block of Gardenia Avenue by Special Investigations Division detectives, arrested, and transported to Long Beach City Jail."

    The suspect was booked on suspicion of murder, and he was held on $3 million bail, police said.

    "In less than seven hours, LBPD personnel identified and safely arrested this violent murder suspect, once again demonstrating the focus we will maintain on capturing those willing to victimize others," LBPD Chief Wally Hebeish said in a statement "We do not tolerate gun violence in our community. Our detectives, officers, and professional staff are working around the clock to keep our city safe."

    Police plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office this week for filing consideration.

    "Detectives believe there were additional witnesses in the area and are encouraging them to come forward," police said.
