Local artists bring vibrancy to Pittsburg ArtWalk

    2024-04-24

PITTSBURG, Kan. (KOAM) - Pittsburg is gearing up for a burst of creativity as local artists and organizations prepare to showcase their talents at the upcoming Pittsburg Artwalk. Set against the backdrop of a festival-like atmosphere, the event promises live music, art demonstrations, and a host of community activities, drawing in residents and visitors alike.

Among the myriad of attractions at the Artwalk are Molly and Aston -- or Harley Quinn and Joker -- who are making a colorful appearance courtesy of Ashley Denham, a local artist. Denham, who incorporated the iconic characters into her wedding two years ago, is excited to bring her beloved pets to the Pittsburg event.

"We did the Harley Quinn Diamonds on the Side with the split dye because, you know, Harley in the comic book was black and red. And then we got Aston Martin in his purple pants, his joker green topknot, and his smile," Denham shared enthusiastically.

For Denham, the Artwalk is not only a celebration of art but also a fusion of her passions. "It brings art and our pets together for me two things I love the most my animals and art," she remarked.

Denham is just one of over 100 local artists and organizations participating in the event, each bringing their unique flair to the occasion. Meg McCoy, representing the Pittsburg Arts Council and a local artist herself, expressed her excitement about being part of the cultural extravaganza.

"Basically, every artist in town shows up and shows out, shares their work. People who run Artwalk are really committed to making sure that Pittsburg culture is appreciated and accessible," McCoy commented. She's excited to display her drawings and her newly-released comic book.

For McCoy, the Artwalk is more than just a showcase of creativity; it's an opportunity to connect with the community and expand artistic horizons. "There's really no way to access your community when you're creating artwork alone in your home, and it just the amount of people that Artwalk has connected me where I went from, you know, just drawing in my room to making a career out of art," she shared.

The Pittsburg Artwalk kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday, promising an evening of artistic immersion along Broadway between Seventh and Fourth Streets. However, organizers caution that in the event of severe weather, the Artwalk will be canceled and not rescheduled. They urge the public to stay updated on the event's social media page for any announcements or changes -- and to remain hopeful.
