More heat records expected to break Friday around Portland, Vancouver area

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Another round of record-breaking heat is likely around Portland Friday as this late-season heatwave continues.

It might be meteorological fall, but current Portland heat records will be the only thing falling Friday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to near 100 degrees for the second day in a row. Thursday’s record-setting heat put Sept. 5 in the books for the latest 100-degree temperature ever recorded in Portland. It also broke a daily record for highest heat. Both of which happened in 1944 when the temperature was 101 degrees.

If Portland area highs make it to 100 degrees Friday, that would be the new record for the latest date with 100-degree heat in September. There’s a chance that could happen, but Portland area temperatures are predicted to be slightly cooler by the end the week. Afternoon highs expected to break daily records, but will struggle to break the 100s.

Wildfire smoke will continue to pollute Portland area skies Friday and Saturday. The smell of smoke is likely to last through the first half of the weekend. That comes as east winds begin to slow and temperatures cool.

Air quality will suffer through Saturday, but will be exchanged for more clouds next week. Over the next seven days, Portland will undergo a nearly 30-degree temperature swing.

Afternoon highs will go from above average to below average next week. The chance for rain is low, but clouds will help make it feel more like September in the Pacific Northwest.
