By Kristy Tallman, April 27, 2024 MADRAS, Ore. — Second graders at Madras Elementary School are making waves in water safety education at the Madras Aquatic Center. This week, over 150 students participated in swim lessons aimed at instilling crucial water safety skills. Through a collaborative effort with the MAC Recreation District, Madras Elementary is committed to equipping its students with essential life-saving abilities. The program emphasizes building confidence and awareness in and around water—a vital component, especially considering recent statistics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is identified as the second leading cause of death among children aged 5 to 14 in the United States, trailing only behind motor vehicle crashes. By immersing students in swim lessons and fostering comfort, confidence, and safety awareness, the initiative aims to provide them with lifelong skills to navigate aquatic environments safely. The partnership between Madras Elementary School and the MAC Recreation District underscores a proactive approach to addressing water safety concerns, ensuring that children are adequately prepared to enjoy aquatic activities responsibly.
