( KRON ) — Fifty residents at a senior care facility in Oakley were evacuated on Sunday after a sewage leak, the Contra Costa Fire Protection District (Con Fire) said. Fire crews received a call about several people trapped in an elevator.

The main power of the building was shut off as the leak came from a bathroom on the second floor to the electrical room.

A county hazmat team was called to the facility at 67 Carol Lane to identify the substance found in the overflowed bathtub. It is unknown what exactly was in the bathtub, but Con Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Burris said it’s a “mixture of things.”

The senior home’s residents were sent to a nearby hotel, according to Burris. Con Fire has responded to the building before for reports of flooding.

Multiple residents of the facility said the building has had a handful of issues that haven’t been addressed.

“We don’t want us to complain because if we complain, they’ll give us our 72-hour eviction notice, one resident said. “It’s elder abuse. Simple as that… We shouldn’t have to live like this.”

The leak was reported to have happened around 11:35 a.m., according to Con Fire’s X page .
