    Suspect arrested in connection to charred body found at San Jose homeless encampment

    ( KRON ) — A suspect has been arrested in connection to charred human remains found at a San Jose homeless encampment last week , police announced Monday. Patrol officers with the San Jose Police Department responded on Monday, Aug. 19 at around 4:33 p.m. to suspicious circumstances in the area of Roberts Avenue and Vintage Way.

    According to police, the reporting party said they had located the burned remains of their missing family member at a homeless encampment. Officers arrived on the scene and found burned human remains.

    Preliminary evidence, police said, suggested the victim had been murdered. Detectives with the SJPD Homicide Unit responded to the scene and launched an investigation.

    Detectives identified a suspect, 39-year-old Jesus Casas of San Jose. A warrant was obtained for his arrest.

    On Thursday, Aug. 22, SJPD officers located Casas in San Jose and booked him into Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder. Police say the motive and circumstances surrounding the event are still under investigation.

    The victim’s identity will be released pending confirmation by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin. The incident marked San Jose’s 21st homicide of 2024.
