Man accused of killing 83-year-old in Santa Fe appears in court

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Zachary Babitz made his first appearance in court Tuesday morning. Babitz is facing charges for robbing and killing 83-year-old Gordon Wilson outside a Best Buy in Santa Fe on August 6.

According to an affidavit, Babitz got into an altercation with Wilson while trying to steal his car. Babitz told a friend that Wilson tried to grab the gun which prompted Babitz to shoot the victim. Babitz was arrested in Las Cruces after he was accused of robbing an Arby’s.

Babitz is facing charges of first degree murder and armed robbery. The state has filed a motion to keep Babitz in detention until his trial.
