LAWRENCE, Kan. ( KSNT ) – Earlier this year, Lawrence artist Stan Herd made a large earthworks portrait of Vice President Kamala Harris as a political message, and now, he’s finished her running mate.

In just over a month, Stan Herd started turning a plot of his land into a canvas. It now features Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

“We waited and put the question mark in, and then when Tim was announced, we came out here and started laying Tim out,” Herd said.

Herd started work on the portraits with Kamala’s image after announcing her presidential run in July.

Herd told KSNT News that, unlike most art pieces, earthwork must constantly be tweaked and maintained.

“I never really know what I’m going to see when I get back,” Herd said. “We’ve had a lot of rain, which is good. Never wish away the rain. Then, it just grows back in another 10 days. It’s almost 7 inches tall, so I have to come every time and mow the face. The interesting thing is the faces are changing because I’m mixing it up more and adding things.”

Herd said his ultimate goal is to get the attention of the Harris campaign with hopes of a visit while they’re on the campaign trail.
