TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – First responders on the scene say everyone is safe after a fire started in a southwest Topeka home Sunday afternoon.

Chris Hamilton with the Mission Township Fire Dept. said they were able to put the fire out quickly, but that there’s extensive smoke damage. The home is located near the 3400 block of SW Urish road.

Hamilton said two children suffered from minor smoke inhalation, but they did not require medical transport and they’re okay now.

A family member of the victims of the fire said she’s grateful first responders were able to keep everyone safe.

“My cousin was downstairs with her son when the fire started,” Destiny H. said, “but they’re fine too. I’m just glad that the fire department was there for my family.”

Hamilton said an investigator from the Topeka Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
