TEXARKANA, Ark./Texas ( KTAL/KMSS ) – A Shreveport based non-profit is officially making its mark in the Texarkana area.

The mission of the non-profit organization, Geaux 4 Kids, is to provide a little comfort to children on their first night in the foster care system with the help of their Geaux Bags.

“And they had started this project out of their trunk out of their vehicle and it has just grown through the whole state of Louisiana. Now it’s reaching Texas and Arkansas.” says Kristen Schultz with the Texarkana, AR Police Department.

The first batch of Geaux Bags was handed over to law enforcement agencies in Texarkana on Thursday.

“So the Geaux Bags are for kids that get displaced from the home and they need toiletries or items, hygiene products, a pillow, a blanket, anything that may comfort them in an unfortunate situation.” says Schultz.

Within the next month they plan to evenly distribute 100 of the bags to the Bowie and Miller County Sheriff’s Offices and the Texarkana Police Departments on both sides of the state line.

“I think the Geaux Bags are gonna be a great asset to us. I mean, it gives just another tool in our toolbox.”Shawn Vaughn with the Texarkana, TX Police Department.

The law enforcement serving on the front lines will be the ones making sure that these bags get into the hands of the kids who need them most.

‘Geaux 4 Kids’ expanding into Texarkana area

“Sometimes when we deal with these kids, they’re having to leave a situation, that’s terrible. You know, it’s already traumatic for them and, and it just gives us the ability to, to let them kind of go through that situation, maybe with a little more dignity.” says Vaughn.

Be sure to tune in to our ‘Six Hours of Caring’ telethon on September 17th as we try to reach a goal of raising $15,000 to support their efforts to expand.
