BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — Despite how difficult it can be to find a job in modern times, data suggests that the number of employed Americans has increased this year . However, even if labor has increased, many workers are still unhappy with their jobs, to the point where quitting seems like the preferable path to take — and as recent data shows, residents of the Peace Garden State are no exception.

As part of a study on employee happiness and employment across the United States, marketing agency Hennessey Digital studied the number of individuals who quit their jobs in March 2024 as recorded by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and recorded them as percentages. These percentages were then ranked against one another to determine which states have the highest rates of quitting in the country. When the rankings concluded, it was revealed that North Dakotans are some of those who are the most interested in leaving their positions.

According to the study, 2.5% of all workers in the Peace Garden State (11,000 individuals) quit their jobs in March of 2024. This is the seventh-highest rate in the nation, and one that it shares with Delaware and Kansas. This number, while above the national average, is still low compared to the likes of Wyoming, Montana, or Alaska, the last of which has nearly double ND’s percentage.

As opposed to these high levels of unemployment and unsatisfaction, states like Minnesota, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania boast far lower rates of quitting — and while the most obvious reason for this is that their workers are satisfied in their careers, the high prices found in these areas and nationwide lack of proper employment may also play a part in their statistics. This is especially the case in California, which has one of the greatest living costs in the United States.

“From the results,” states Hennessey Digital’s CEO Jason Hennessey, “it’s clear to see that a steady stream of workers across America are constantly leaving their jobs, be it for retirement or a different career. Louisiana experienced one of the largest changes, with an impressive 36% decrease in quitters between 2023 and 2024. It’ll be interesting to see if new states make the top ten ranking in the future.”

As busy as North Dakota’s labor force is, many problems still plague it outside of unhappiness— including the risk of workplace injuries, unemployment rates, and low wages. For an in-depth look at ND’s economy, visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics website here .
