MINOT, ND ( KXNET ) — For some animal shelters across North Dakota, advocating for animals’ lives is the biggest part of their mission.

Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot is the only no-kill animal shelter in town. A no-kill shelter will not euthanize animals even if they are not adopted in the community. And they strongly advocate for the well-being of all animals in their care.

According to Bestfriends.org , out of the 16 animal shelters in North Dakota, 11 are no-kill. Souris Valley staff say they hope other shelters will move to a no-kill status in the future.

“Ultimately the goal would be that North Dakota would be a no-kill state altogether. We want to find homes for these animals, it’s not their fault that they are born and here they are, and they are innocent and we want to advocate for them and provide them with a space,” said Haley Burchett, communications specialist for the shelter.

The Souris Valley Animal Shelter is hosting a day-out event on September 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where the public will be able to meet the shelter staff and all of the animals in their care.
