Two juveniles arrested in connection with east Austin homicide

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Two juveniles were arrested and charged with murder in connection with a homicide that happened last week in east Austin , the Austin Police Department said in a release on Monday.

Around 8:35 p.m. on Aug. 22, officers responded to the 6300 block of Thurgood Avenue to a reported homicide and found a juvenile male, who police later identified as Jeremiah Cavazos, 13. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:55 p.m., the release said.

The names of the two juveniles arrested were not released by police. They will be referred to as Juvenile No. 1 and Juvenile No. 2.

Police documents said Cavazos and Juvenile No. 2 allegedly drove a stolen vehicle to Thurgood Avenue to allegedly rob Juvenile No. 1. This then prompted a “shootout” between all three juveniles, the release said.

Cavazos was shot and then got into the backseat of the vehicle, according to police. When Juvenile No. 2 began driving Cavazos was thrown from “the vehicle onto the pavement,” according to police. Then, Juvenile No. 1 ran away from the scene, the release said.

According to police, Juvenile No. 2 was charged with capital murder, and Juvenile No. 1 was charged with first-degree murder.

This is now being investigated as Austin’s 40th homicide of 2024, according to police.
