New affordable housing units coming to Spokane for refugees and the public

    2024-03-22

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane is about to get more affordable housing.

Thanks to a partnership between Thrive International and the Spokane Public Library, a plot of land that's gone unused since the 90's will get a new life.

At just over an acre and a half, the lot will be used for at least 45 housing units which are able to house more than 100 people.

Half of the spots will go to refugees, and the other half will be open to the rest of the public.

"The U.S. is extremely different than any other place that they've been," Lidia Pauline, director of housing at Thrive, said. "So there's so many things for them to learn and so for them to be near people who have experience in America, who can help guide them, and also from the other side, where I think it's very important."

The facility will also include a community space, garden and library kiosk which will all be open to the public.

Construction is expected to wrap up sometime in 2025.
